Why Soka Samaritan Initiative

SOKA stands for Sustainable Opportunity and Knowledge to All. Soka Samaritan Initiative is a community-based organization within the slums of Kibera that empowers the vulnerable in the community through charity work, mentorship, and hands-on training on skills that enable them to be self-reliant and contribute towards development within the community. We started the organization in August 2022, training young single mothers on videography and photography and officially registered it in August 2023 as a Community Based Organization.

Soka Samaritan Initiative Programs

1.Young single mothers Mentorship & Empowerment program

Within the slums of Kibera, young mothers face overwhelming challenges that limit their opportunities and silence their potential. Many are pushed into vulnerability through sexual exploitation, early school dropouts, substance abuse, and prostitution. Deep-rooted cultural beliefs and harmful stereotypes often label them as failures, denying them equal opportunities and dignity.

2.Assist Without a Face – Restoring Dignity, Keeping Girls in School

In Kenya’s slums, more than 70% of women and girls cannot afford hygienic menstrual products, while only 30% of schools have adequate hygiene facilities suitable for girls. As a result, many adolescent girls are forced to stay at home during their menstrual periods, missing nearly one week of school every month.

3.Mental Health Program – Healing Minds, Restoring Hope

Mental health is a vital part of overall well-being. It shapes how we think, feel, act, handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy decisions. Good mental health is essential at every stage of life—from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

4. Child Feeding Program – Nourishing Lives, Protecting Futures

In response to this urgent need, our Child Feeding Program was established to provide two nutritious meals a day to vulnerable children and young mothers within the slums. Through the generosity of well-wishers and community partners, the program has already supported over 200 vulnerable families, ensuring access to balanced meals that are essential for healthy growth, development, and overall well-being.

5.Sports & Talent Development Program – Play, Protect, Empower

For many children growing up in the slums of Kibera, play is not a luxury—it is often a missing part of childhood. Limited space, poverty, insecurity, and lack of resources mean that most children do not have the opportunity to enjoy safe playtime like their peers elsewhere. Yet play is a critical component of child development, supporting physical health, emotional well-being, confidence, discipline, and social skills.
