Young single mothers Mentorship & Empowerment program - Changing Narratives, Empowering Futures.

Because of desperation and lack of support, many young women are exposed to early marriages and forced into family responsibilities without adequate preparation or life experience. Gender-based violence becomes a harsh reality, yet most suffer in silence with no safe space or voice to highlight their struggles. This reality has contributed to a broken system that continues to marginalize women within the community.

Soka Samaritan Initiative was founded to change this narrative.

Through training, mentorship, and community-based empowerment programs, we work to restore dignity, confidence, and hope among teen mothers and women in Kibera. With limited resources but an unwavering commitment, we provide practical training in photography and videography, life skills, maternal health, child nutrition, and women’s rights. Our approach focuses on understanding core values, personality traits, behaviors, and emotional intelligence—equipping women to manage stress, make informed decisions, and take control of their lives with clarity and confidence.

Our main objective is to equip young women with hands-on, income-generating skills that enable self-reliance while simultaneously creating awareness on gender equality and women’s empowerment within Kibera. To date, we have successfully trained over 100 young mothers in photography skills drawn from all 14 villages across Kibera’s slums. The impact has been transformative.

These efforts have helped dismantle long-held stereotypes that portray young mothers as failures. Families and communities are increasingly giving them a second chance—supporting their return to education and recognizing their ability to grow, lead, and thrive despite early challenges.

At Soka Samaritan Initiative, we believe that when women are empowered, families are strengthened, communities are transformed, and the future is rewritten.
